🇳🇿 New Zealand Wage After Tax - Complete 2026/27 Guide

New Zealand uses a PAYE (Pay As You Earn) progressive income tax system with 5 brackets. Unlike most countries, there is no tax-free threshold — tax starts from the very first dollar. However the effective rate is much lower than the marginal rate. From 1 April 2026, the default KiwiSaver rate increased from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers.

How NZ PAYE Works

Income Tax - 5 Progressive Brackets

Tax starts from dollar one at 10.5%. Rates rise gradually to 39% above NZ$180,000. Only the portion in each band is taxed at that rate — your effective rate is always much lower than your marginal rate.

ACC Earners Levy

1.75% of gross earnings (2026/27), capped at NZ$156,641. This funds New Zealand's no-fault accident compensation scheme — covering treatment and income replacement for any accident, work-related or not. Unique to New Zealand.

KiwiSaver - New 3.5% Default

From 1 April 2026, default employee and employer contributions both increased from 3% to 3.5%. Employees can elect to reduce back to 3% for 3 to 12 months if needed. Funds locked until age 65 or first home purchase.

Student Loan Repayment

NZ-based borrowers repay 12% of income above NZ$22,828. Deducted automatically through PAYE. No repayments required while living overseas. Interest-free for NZ residents since 2006.

IETC - Independent Earner Tax Credit

NZ$520 annual credit for earners with income between NZ$24,000 and NZ$48,000. Phases out to zero at NZ$70,000. Claimed through your tax code (ME) or annual tax return. Modest but free money if eligible.

No Capital Gains Tax

New Zealand famously has no comprehensive capital gains tax on property or shares. This makes NZ one of the most investor-friendly tax environments in the developed world — a key reason many high earners choose to live and invest here.
