🇮🇹 Italy Wage After Tax - Complete 2026 Guide

Italy taxes personal income through IRPEF (Imposta sul Reddito delle Persone Fisiche), a progressive system with 3 brackets. The 2026 Budget Law (No.199/2025) reduced the middle rate from 35 percent to 33 percent, saving middle-income earners up to 440 euro per year.

How Italian Salary Calculation Works

Step 1 - INPS Social Contributions

Employee pays approx 9.19 percent of gross to INPS covering pension, unemployment and sick leave. This reduces your taxable income.

Step 2 - Taxable Income

Taxable income equals gross salary minus INPS contributions. Employment deductions (detrazioni) reduce the final tax bill directly.

Step 3 - IRPEF Progressive Tax

Apply 3 brackets: 23 percent up to 28,000, 33 percent on 28,001 to 50,000 (reduced in 2026), and 43 percent above 50,000.

Step 4 - Employment Deduction

Employees deduct up to 1,955 euro from IRPEF. This creates a zero-tax area up to approx 8,500 euro of income.

Step 5 - Regional Surcharge

Ranges from 0.70 percent (Valle d'Aosta) to 3.33 percent (Calabria). National average is approx 1.73 percent.

Step 6 - Municipal Surcharge

Set by each municipality. Ranges from 0 to 0.90 percent. Rome charges 0.90 percent, Milan 0.80 percent.
